Even though the Championships had been underway at the All England Lawn Tennis Club since late June, we didn’t start to pay loads of attention until the ~~Men’s~~ Gentlemen’s semi-finals and finals. Below we see Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic before yesterday’s Final.

There was substantial pressure on Mr. Murray. Going into yesterday’s match it had been 77 years since a British man had won Wimbledon.

In near record-breaking heat the two battled for more than three hours.

While this is the first time in 77 years for a British Men's champion, Briton Virgina Wade won the Women's championships in 1977. This year's Women's Champion is Marion Bartoli of France.

Mr. Djokovic was exceptionally gracious about his loss, as was Ms. Bartoli about her win. More from the Daily Telegraph via DNA India:

She is quite possibly the most thoughtful, magnanimous and delightfully quirky ladies' champion that Wimbledon has had. Bartoli was blissfully unaware of the swirl of publicity around her, not least Inverdale's now-notorious "not a looker" comment on BBC radio.

For those unaware of what happened, the BBC5 tennis commentator, John Inverdale, made some moronic statements. Things I doubt he would say about any male player. The Independent has details:

The French tennis player had just achieved her dream of winning the grass-court title, but she was brought swiftly back down to earth when Inverdale claimed she was "never going to be a looker".

As Bartoli, 28, sank to her knees in joy and embraced her father in the player's box, Inverdale told Radio 5 Live listeners: "I just wonder if her dad, because he has obviously been the most influential person in her life, did say to her when she was 12, 13, 14 maybe, 'listen, you are never going to be, you know, a looker.

"You are never going to be somebody like a Sharapova, you're never going to be 5ft 11, you're never going to be somebody with long legs, so you have to compensate for that."

Mr. Inverdale has apologized.

The Finals were a little different this year, with no Nadal. (Seeded #1.)
