The New ‘It Color’ is Pink…or is it?

Hello-Hello, welcome to a new week here at The Prepatorium.

We begin with news about the shade dubbed next year’s ‘It’ color:

Pantone

Pantone

The color is called “Radiant Orchid”.  Twice a year Pantone reveals the colors expected to have significant use by designers in apparel and other industries. Below we see the color incorporated into fashion via InStyle, they show it in a Tibi dress and Illamasqua nail polish.

More on how the colors are decided from the Wall Street Journal:

Pantone….each year polls graphic, industrial, fashion and other designers around the world, as well as manufacturers and retailers, asking what colors they plan to use in coming seasons. A color committee made up of Pantone executives and clients makes a pick based on the surveys, sales of color swatches and its experts’ opinions.

The Windsor Star’s story showed items from spring 2014 collections in the color; below left, a Missoni top and on the right, pieces by Max Mara.

The reason we asked if pink really is the new ‘it’ color? Because this shade looks so much more purple-ish than pink. Christina Binkley’s piece in the Journal referenced above was titled Love It, Hate It, a New Pink Is Coming; in her article she refers to it as a pinky purple, that makes sense. But not everyone made a distinction. More from Ms. Binkley’s story.

At a time when anything goes in fashion, Pantone’s heavily marketed “Color of the Year” announcement can raise eyebrows. These days, there is no ‘It’ hem length or cut or wash of jeans. So is there still any such thing as the color?

“Absolutely, there’s an “It” color for spring,” says Ken Downing, fashion director for Neiman Marcus, firmly. “It’s pink.”

When thinking about pink the shades that come to mind are more like these colors.

Regardless of how one perceives Radiant Orchid, it is a vibrant hue. (But it looks rather odd in cupcake frosting, as shown by Pantone on their Instagram account.)

When Pantone decrees one specific shade as the Color of the Year they also release a series of other popular colors for each season. Below, the hues we’ll be seeing in spring fashions for women.

The crush of business mandates a brief post, so we’ll just skim our other topic of the day, some darling designer dolls auctioned off to raise money for UNICEF.

This is the 11th year for the fundraiser, called the Frimousses de Créateurs. Noted fashion and lifestyle designers are asked to donate dolls (or other objects) inspired by a specific theme. This year’s theme was “Wonderful Paris”.  The Parisian influence can be seen in two of my favorites, the Chanel (L) and Chantal Thomass (R) dolls.

The best part of the entire undertaking is that all proceeds from the auction go to providing vaccinations for children in the Darfur region of Sudan. The auction was held last week and more than $250,000 was raised, results that bring to mind the “Oh, you beautiful doll!” phrase.

With hopes you are able to stay warm and dry in the wicked weather many are experiencing, we say ‘g’bye’ until next time!
